The Different Kinds of Cigar Store Indians Available

When Shopping for the elusive Cigar Store Indian for either a gift or just general knowledge, WOW!!! What confusing issues to deal with. I have found that Commericalism has responded to the public demand in a number of creative responses. The categories of my research are in the following (Statues Poured in Molds, Machine Carved Statues, Chainsaw Carved Statues, Individually Sculpted Statues.)

*********************************************************************

POURED AND MOLDED STATUES

The following is an example of a statue produced from pouring plaster into a mold, you get nice quality and also a product that chips and degrades over time to the point that it oftens ends up in the trash rather than in a personal collection of Art.

(Cigar) Cigar Store Indian, Western store display, approximately 39" NR No reserve. This is an attention getter-- Approx. 39" tall! It would make a great lamp or work well for any dealer wanting to draw customers. It also serves well for accenting any room for Western décor. It is Approx. 9" x 9" at the base and is made of high-grade plaster.

MACHINE DUPLICATED STATUES

The following is an example of a statue produced from being hand carved, but, I have have found that they appear to be identical in appearance. From my personal experience I have found to make an identical carved statue to be almost impossible. There fore I conclude that the following examples of statues are machine duplicated. The over all collector value is thus place accordingly to a price worthy of a duplicated piece of art.

TWG, Sedler's Antiques Marketing announces our solid wood, hand-made, hand-carved Indians. Standing six feet tall and weighing about 150 pounds, these handsome reproductions are the perfect answer to the almost impossible task of finding an original Indian from the 1800's, when the Indians first appeared on the sidewalks of popular cigar stores across the land and identified these shops as cigar retailers. These unique Indians are all individually carved and painted so that no two are alike. The goal was to create an exact reproduction of the Indian in the manner in which the originals were created. The results achieved from the carver and painter is a remarkable likeness to the original. Those who have seen them have commented that the particular style and pose chosen to reproduce is one that they remember best as a classic cigar store Indian, while the uniqueness of the piece through the individuality of the artist makes it still very much one-of-a-kind. The quality look and feel are the reasons our Indians are proudly displayed in homes and offices throughout the country. Sedler's thinks this piece is the next logical addition to your cigar smoking environment. (more) These Indians would enhance the flavor of high class cigar friendly restaurants, increase the appearance of fashionable hotel lobbies or go nicely in the home of a cigar aficionado or cigar accouterment private collector who would enjoy the Indian while searching for the much sought after original. Sedler's specializes in providing the best quality cigar store Indians in the industry through a network of contacts. They maintain a constant search for available Indians and other figures that ideally match their clients requirements.

CHAIN SAWED STATUES

Item #0483
"FRANK GALLAGHER" WOODEN INDIAN

"Wood Carvings" were first created after Native Americans introduced English settlers to tobacco in Virginia during the 1600s. Later, merchants put the sculptures outside their stores to show customers that they sold tabacco products.

You've seen them at Trading Post, you've seen them at souvenir shops, now you have the opportunity to own your own "Cigar Store Wooden Indian". Carved by the same family that carved the very first one for a man that owned Gallaghers Furniture Store, back in the 1800's. A truly unique conversation piece, for home, office or store front. Own a piece of American heritage, a Frank Gallagher original sculpture.

Frank Gallaghers ancestor, one of the first wooden Indian carvers, started carving his Indians in the 1840's. His great, great grandson Frank is known to be one of approximately 12 true full-blooded Man-Dan Indians still living. Unfortunately, the Man-Dan village was infected by small pox which practically wiped out the entire tribe. Frank's ancestor however, was away from the village at the time, working for a furniture maker. The furniture maker's name was Samuel Gallagher. Following the custom of Indian laborers of that era, Frank took his employer's last name as his own. One of the original Wooden Indians are on display in the Smithsonian Institute. The Gallaghers continue the art of carving as their ancestor would want it; the old way - the right way - by hand.

Aspen wood from Colorado is the preferred raw material for the creations of the Gallaghers. A copy of Arizona Highways magazine to accompany each sculpture with a two page story highlighting the Gallagher family.

Details:
6 Foot tall with a 14" by 14" base and 14" wide.
Signed F. Gallagher on back of headdress.
*Shipping to major cities by way of air cargo - 67cents per pound.
